Tips - Keywording

I'm going to give you some tips on ow to efficiently keyword your images and videos. Let's start off understanding what IPTC means:

  • IPTC is the standard developed in the 1970's by the International Press Telecommunications Council. It was initially developed as a standard for exchanging information between news organizations and has evolved over time. Around 1994, Adobe Photoshop's "File Info" form enabled users to insert and edit IPTC metadata in digital image files and so it was adopted by stock photo agencies, and other publishing businesses outside of the news media.

This is a great tool for when you apply in multiple agencies. All the agencies I know accepted IPTC tagged images so it's really handy. You describe the photo (title, description and keywords) once and it will be read on all the agencies. You can "batch describe" the photos so that saves even more time. I usually use Adobe Bridge to describe the photos

Now, when you keyword an image, try to be as accurate as possible. For instance, when you are keywording the image below, check the do's and don'ts:

Cattle; Highland Cattle; Bull; Mammal; Farm; Field; Grass; Livestock; Sunlight; Sunbeam

Fur, Horn, Eyes, Tree, Sky, Cloud, Fat, Large

Most websites require between 10 to 50 keywords. Avoid keyword spamming or adding irrelevant keywords, names, brands, et cetera...

Here is a list of programs that will let you keyword and describe images:
