In stock photography, there are inumerous ways of earning money. One of them is by referring buyers and contributors to their site. If you look at the end of the link of the agencies posted here, most of them have a referral ID after id:

So when you click on one of these links and sign up, start uploading and eventually sell images, or if you buy an image or subscription, I get a bonus for that.

It's simple and can come handy when sales are a bit slower. You should always have something hidden for a rainy day!

On some websites, like iStockphoto, you only get rewarded for referring buyers and not contributors. The earnings on referrals varies from US$0,03 to a overUS$100if you refer a photo buyer that purchases some sort of subscription.

It is a simple sort of advertisement, no diferent from any other. You will not be loosing anything by this. When you sell (or buy) a photograph, you will recieve or pay the same amount, having been referred by someone or not. In some cases, like on iStockphoto, if I refer a new member, he or she gets 3 credits to purchase photos for free and if they buy credits, I get a one time US$10,00 bonus.
